Welcome to Fossy (accessible at fossy.dev). By accessing or using our website, services, directory, and applications (collectively, the "Service"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree to these Terms, please do not access or use our Service.

Fossy is operated as part of the GreenRocket family. Throughout these Terms, "Fossy", "we", "us", and "our" refer to the operators of the website and directory.

1. Description of Service

Fossy is a curated directory showcasing the top free & open-source software (FOSS) projects. We collect, rank, filter, and display public metadata of open-source repositories (such as GitHub stars, forks, primary language, contributors list, license info, and topics) to help developers discover high-signal software.

All information is provided for informational and educational purposes. The underlying code, projects, libraries, or platforms listed on Fossy are hosted externally (typically on platforms like GitHub or GitLab) and are subject to their own respective licensing and terms.

2. Intellectual Property Rights

Our Content: The design, layout, custom icons, graphics, compilation database, curation text, editor reviews ("Editor's Picks"), and original code of the Fossy website are the intellectual property of Fossy and GreenRocket. You may not copy, reproduce, scrape, or distribute our design or curated database structure without our prior written consent.

Third-Party Content: Open-source project logos, trademarks, repository code, and documentation belong to their respective authors or copyright holders. Fossy displays this metadata in accordance with the respective public licenses (e.g., MIT, Apache 2.0, GPL) or fair-use doctrines. Listing a project on Fossy does not imply endorsement, sponsorship, or affiliation with the project's copyright holder.

3. Acceptable Use of the Service

You agree to use our Service only for lawful purposes. You agree NOT to:

  • Use automated systems, scripts, scrapers, spiders, or crawlers to extract data or content from the website in a manner that degrades performance, causes service disruptions, or bypasses access controls.
  • Attempt to interfere with, disrupt, or compromise the integrity or security of our servers, database, or third-party integrations (such as Clerk or Supabase).
  • Submit false, misleading, spammy, or malicious project listings, suggestions, reviews, or contributor claims.
  • Impersonate another user, contributor, developer, or Fossy staff member.

4. User Accounts and Contributions

To access certain features of Fossy (e.g., bookmarking, submitting project listings, claiming contributor profiles), you may be required to sign in using Google or other OAuth providers via our authentication partner, Clerk.

By submitting any suggestions, content, project metadata, or feedback to Fossy ("User Generated Content" or "UGC"), you grant us a worldwide, perpetual, royalty-free, non-exclusive license to display, modify, adapt, publish, and distribute that content across our directory. You warrant that you have all necessary rights to grant this license. We reserve the right to moderate, modify, or remove any UGC at our sole discretion, without notice.

5. Disclaimer of Warranties

Fossy is provided on an "AS IS" and "AS AVAILABLE" basis. We make no representations or warranties of any kind, express or implied, as to the operation of the Service, the accuracy of listed metadata, or the safety, security, usefulness, or legality of the open-source projects listed.

Code Security Notice: We do not audit or verify the code of listed repositories. You are solely responsible for inspecting any open-source code or package for security vulnerabilities, malware, or license compliance before importing or running it on your systems.

6. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Fossy and GreenRocket, its directors, employees, or partners, shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages resulting from (i) your use of or inability to use the Service; (ii) any security vulnerabilities or defects present in listed third-party software; (iii) unauthorized access to or alteration of your profile data; or (iv) any third-party content or conduct on the Service.

7. Modifications to Terms

We reserve the right to revise these Terms at any time. All revisions are effective immediately when posted. Your continued use of Fossy following the posting of revised Terms constitutes your acceptance of the changes. Please check this page regularly to ensure you are familiar with the current version.

8. Governing Law and Jurisdiction

These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the jurisdiction of the operators of GreenRocket, without regard to conflicts of law provisions. Any legal action or proceeding arising under these Terms shall be brought exclusively in the courts located in that jurisdiction.
